The family is based in Singapore and this London apartment was bought for use as a holiday home. They wanted the apartment to feel quintessentially English and reflect the history of the Victorian Era building but with a relaxed and humorous vibe. They wanted a bright and vibrant home that feels cheerful even on the gloomiest of winter days.
The apartment is on the 1st floor of an 1850s building and had been converted into apartments in the 1970s. It had not been updated since and the electrical, heating and plumbing systems all needed replacing. The unit is north facing, with the bedrooms opening to an internal courtyard, resulting in cold, dark rooms. Our challenge was to brighten and bring warmth and character to the dim rooms.
Our architectural team had to comply with stringent conservation restrictions, while simultaneously satisfying the functional requirements of modern family life. Many of the historic details had been lost during the 1970s conversation, and we were tasked with restoring a sense of history but reinterpreted with a whimsical, optimistic flavour.
